The sequel to The Angry Birds Movie (2016), the film is directed by Thurop Van Orman and co-directed by John Rice in their directorial debuts. Written by Peter Ackerman, Eyal Podell, and Jonathon E. Stewart, the film stars an ensemble cast including Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage reprising their roles from the first film, with newcomers Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, and Eugenio Derbez joining the cast. The film concerns Red, Chuck, and Bomb being forced to team up with Leonard and the rest of the pigs when an advanced weapon threatens both Bird and Piggy Island.

Plot[edit]
The birds and pigs are in constant war against each other after Piggy Island, which was destroyed in a prior battle with the birds,[N 2] is rebuilt. Eventually, a giant ice ball from a nearby isle called Eagle Island hits the sea near Piggy Island, forcing the pigs to seek a truce with the birds. Zeta, the leader of Eagle Island, is fed up with her frozen surroundings and wants to occupy the two islands by shooting ice balls to force their inhabitants to evacuate.
Meanwhile, three hatchlings, one of whom is Terence and Matilda’s daughter Zoe, plan to act in a play using three eggs at a beach, but the eggs drift out to sea by accident. They set sail to retrieve them, but once they catch up to them, a whale blows them into a cloud. They manage to get them down after inflating Zoe into the air but then misplace them again.
Chuck and Bomb force Red to join them in a speed dating activity. Red meets Chuck's sister Silver, an intelligent engineering student who deems him incompatible. Leonard, the King of Piggy Island, meets Red at his house and convinces him to build an alliance with the pigs. They recruit Bomb, Chuck, Mighty Eagle, and Silver. A team meeting in Mighty Eagle’s cave is disrupted when an ice ball hits Eagle Mountain and destroys it.
As the team travel to Eagle Island by submarine, Red assures the civilians that they do not need to evacuate. Once there, Mighty Eagle confesses that Zeta is his ex-fiancée whom he abandoned due to cowardice, and he retreats to Bird Island. Red insists on fighting alone and Silver decides to follow him. They intrude the base from the mouth of the weapon only to be captured by the guards. The other team members disguise themselves as a Trojan Eagle and grab a key card to get into the base. Their disguise rips apart, but not before they drive the eagle guards into a breakdance battle, allowing them to escape.
The three hatchlings finally find the eggs on a small island, held by a python. They defeat her and plan to drift back to Bird Island, but arrive at Piggy Island by mistake and are greeted by three piglets whom they travel with by hot air balloon.
As Red and Silver are confined in ice, Zeta tells them her plan to fire lava balls at Bird Island and Piggy Island. Red, regretting telling the islanders to not evacuate, admits his selfish desire to be liked by everyone to Silver, who comforts him and frees them both using her long crest-braids, reuniting with the team. Red gives up leadership to Silver, who establishes a plan to destroy the weapon. Silver and Red put themselves in an ice ball and roll on a rail towards Zeta's superweapon, but the plan fails and the whole team are confronted by Zeta and her guards, giving her a chance to fire the weapon.
Suddenly, Mighty Eagle arrives to apologize to Zeta, but she quarrels with him, revealing his name as Ethan and that she raised a daughter, her servant Debbie. While Zeta is distracted, Silver tells Chuck to tie up the weapon using her super string, which catches and decelerates the lava balls after Zeta fires them. As the string breaks, the hatchlings and the piglets traveling above Eagle Island help grasp it. The lava balls slide back into the weapon, destroying the whole base.
Everyone escapes, and Mighty Eagle protects Debbie from being crushed by a metal plate, redeeming himself to her and Zeta. Mighty Eagle and Zeta get married on Bird Island, with Red as the chief witness. Everyone praises Red for saving the islands, but he credits Silver and the team for doing so, unveiling a Mount Rushmore-style monument to them, and to his surprise, being even more beloved for his honesty and selflessness. The birds have a huge party to celebrate while Red and Silver begin a romantic relationship and Chuck comes in to interrupt the two.
In a pre-credits scene, the hatchlings put the eggs back home but three snakelets hatch. The injured mother python comes and exchanges the babies with them, only for the three new hatchlings to drift out to sea again, saying goodbye to their sister.

Development[edit]
A sequel to The Angry Birds Movie was announced in August 2016.[14] It will be directed by The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack creator Thurop Van Orman, co-directed by John Rice, and written by Peter Ackerman. John Cohen will return from The Angry Birds Movie to serve as producer, with animation again handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks.[15] Imageworks' sister studio Sony Pictures Animation will release the film under their banner, despite having dropped out of co-producing the project beforehand and had not co-produced the first film either.[16]
In the summer of 2017, production designer Pete Oswald stated that the sequel would be more of an adventure movie that introduces new characters and locations into the world first established in The Angry Birds Movie. While he was not in a position to offer further details about the plot and characters, which remained unknown until the months before the film's release, he expressed hope that it would be a better film than the first installment.[17]
In the days before the film was released, Josh Gad stated that a sequel to The Angry Birds Movie was being made out of a desire to outdo the first film and try out new ideas, one of them being the idea of Birds and Pigs forging an alliance to face a new enemy, which typically does not happen in most Angry Birds games. Gad then explained that the production team went forward with such premise not only because it seemed like an "ingenious" idea, but also because they felt it would feel most appropriate in light of the increasingly polarized political climate at the time, as people who disagree on significant issues struggle to find common ground.[18]
Casting[edit]
In April 2018, the majority of the voice cast was announced. Sudeikis, Gad, McBride, Rudolph, Hader, and Dinklage will reprise their roles from the first film. Jones will voice a new female villain,[19][20] revealed to be Zeta in the teaser trailer.[21] In December 2018, Nicki Minaj joined the cast of the film.[22] Upon its release, the teaser trailer briefly revealed that Hal, a green boomerang bird from the first film, will return in the sequel.[23] Anthony Padilla would return to voice Hal.[24] The following day, producer John Cohen announced in a tweet that Awkwafina will voice Courtney, the first named female pig in the Angry Birds franchise that briefly appeared in the teaser.[6]
Music[edit]
Heitor Pereira, who composed in the first film, returns to compose the score of The Angry Birds Movie 2. On July 25, 2019, American singer-songwriter Kesha released her song "Best Day" for the film as a single.[25]
Trailers[edit]
When the film's first full trailer was released on March 27, 2019, more details about the sequel's characters and their voice roles were revealed. Among several new characters confirmed to appear in the movie was Silver, a bird first introduced in the Angry Birds 2 game.[5] In June, People revealed the identity of the white bird living with Zeta in the teaser trailer as Debbie, voiced by Tiffany Haddish who was one of several voice actors not listed in the initial casting.[11] Later that month, the film's final trailer revealed that Terrence, a large red bird from the first film, will appear without Sean Penn reprising his voice role.[26]
Release[edit]
Marketing[edit]
Sony released a teaser trailer and poster for the film on February 21, 2019.[23] A month later, the film's first full trailer was released[27] In late June, a final trailer was released.[28]
As with the first film, Sony also attempted to connect the film to certain social causes while marketing it, leveraging the premise of the threat of worlds being frozen to call attention to urgent action on climate change[29] and using Silver, who is depicted as a technical expert, as a model to inspire more young women to pursue STEM disciplines.[30]
The film was theatrically released in the United States on August 13, 2019, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the debut of the original Angry Birds game. The film was originally scheduled to be released on September 20, 2019, but was moved two weeks from its original release date of to September 6, 2019, then to August 16, 2019 and then finally two days earlier to August 14, 2019.[31][32][33][34][35][36] It was released two weeks earlier on August 2 in the United Kingdom and Ireland.[37]
The film's North American theatrical release was preceded by Hair Love, a Kickstarter campaign short created by Matthew A. Cherry and Bruce W. Smith.[38]
Video game[edit]
A cooperative tie-in video game, The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure, was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4's PlayStation VR system[39] on August 6, 2019.[40] The game takes place aboard an unidentified Piggy submarine that the main characters use to get to Eagle Island for the film's climatic confrontation.
Reception[edit]
Box office[edit]
As of August 24, 2019, The Angry Birds Movie 2 has grossed $22,406,263 in the United States and Canada, and $34,479,051 in other territories, for a worldwide total of $56,885,314.[3][4]
In the United States and Canada, the film was projected to gross $16–18 million from 3,800 theaters over its first six days of release.[41] It made $2.6 million on its first day, ranking fifth and $5.7 million on its second.[42] It ended up making $16.2 million over the six-day span (including an opening weekend of $10.6 million), finishing in fifth. It was less than a third of the first film's $38.1 million debut, and was blamed on the marketing making the sequel look the same as the first, as well as the crowded marketplace.[43]
Critical response[edit]
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 74% based on 90 reviews, with an average rating of 5.83/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Like its non-aerodynamic title characters, The Angry Birds Movie 2 takes improbable yet delightfully entertaining flight, landing humorous hits along the way."[44] According to Rotten Tomatoes, it is the best-reviewed film adaptation of a video game on their website. [N 3][45][46] On Metacritic, the film has an weighted average score of 60 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[47] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, the same score earned by its predecessor, as well as an average 4 out of 5 stars and 72% "definite recommend" from parents and kids under 12 on PostTrak.[42]
Guy Lodge of Variety summarized his review with: "Perked up by some ingenious slapstick and Leslie Jones' inspired voice work, this gumball-bright sequel to 2016's game-based spinoff is another unexpected pleasure."[48]

Plot[edit]
A reclusive, temperamental outcast bird named Red lives in a village called Bird Island with other flightless birds who lead angerless lives. When his temper causes a "premature hatching" of another bird's egg, he is sentenced to attend an anger management class (the maximum penalty on the island). Red's classmates – Chuck (who is hyperactive and can move at hypervelocity) and Bomb (who can cause explosions with his anger and fear) – try to befriend him, but he avoids them.
One day, a boat docks at the island's shore, damaging Red's house. The birds are greeted by green-colored pigs and their captain Leonard, who claim to be peaceful explorers bringing offerings of friendship. The pigs ingratiate themselves with the birds by introducing them to various innovations, notably a giant slingshot, but begin to overwhelm the island with their numbers. Red becomes suspicious.
Red recruits Chuck and Bomb to find Mighty Eagle, the only flying bird and the island's protector who has not been seen for many years. They find Mighty Eagle on top of Bird Mountain, but he is overweight, self-absorbed, leads the life of a slacker, has not flown in years, and refuses to help them. Red discovers the pigs planting dynamite around the island while the other birds, who probably haven't noticed the three are missing, are distracted with a rave party, but they arrive too late to sound a warning; the pigs escape with the eggs and activate the dynamite, destroying the village. The other birds apologize to Red for not believing him. Under his leadership, they organize an army and construct a boat from the rubble to follow the pigs to Piggy Island.
The birds discover the pigs living in a walled city ruled by Leonard, whose true name is "King Leonard Mudbeard". Deducing the eggs are in the castle at the center of the city, the birds use the slingshot to attack by launching themselves over the walls and into the city's buildings, destroying them. Red, Chuck, and Bomb discover the eggs inside a net being lowered into a giant pot; the pigs are planning to cook and eat them. Mighty Eagle arrives to retrieve Red's group and the eggs, having had a change of heart after witnessing their efforts. One egg falls out of the net and Red battles King Mudbeard for it, but learns to control his anger and distracts him long enough to retrieve the egg. A candle King Mudbeard was holding ignites the pigs' reserve of dynamite, but the pot collapses, falls over, and lands on top of Red, shielding him and the egg from the blast as the city is destroyed.
Red reunites with the other birds as the egg hatches, revealing three small blue birds. Mighty Eagle approaches Red, Chuck, and Bomb, claiming he merely appeared lazy so they could lose faith in him and find faith in themselves, and takes credit for saving the eggs. On Bird Island, Red discovers the other birds have repaired his house in the center of the village and the rest of the rescued eggs have hatched into chicks, who sing to him in gratitude. Moved, Red allows Chuck and Bomb to move in with him. The pigs are revealed to have survived, with King Mudbeard plotting a new plan.
In a mid-credits scene, the three blue birds use the slingshot to launch themselves out towards the ocean.

Production[edit]
The film was officially announced in December 2012, although IGN noted that this was "after months of speculation".[21] The success of the Angry Birds Toons series, according to Rovio employee Jami Laes, "validated" the idea of creating a feature film.[22] The first image from the film was revealed in October 2014, with Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Peter Dinklage as part of its cast.[12] Gad at first declined to star in the movie, feeling it was too similar to his role as Olaf in the 2013 film Frozen but the director eventually convinced him to sign through a 30-minute "visual pitch".[23][24] The film's budget is estimated at $80 million (€75 million).[25] Rovio and Sony Pictures announced they would spend roughly €100 million for the marketing and distribution of the film,[25] giving it the largest budget in the film industry in Finland, outvaluing Big Game's €8.5 million.[25] Despite the massive budget, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed stated that "it is the one that I don't ever lose any sleep over",[26] calling it "tremendously strong as a story".[26] During August 2015, Rovio announced that they were expecting to cut 250 jobs equaling 40% of the company, the only sector spared being personnel working on the movie.[27]
When multiple major studios approached Rovio to discuss the production of the film adaptation in 2010, Hed eventually decided to have Rovio establish its own in-house animation studio and have it work on the film, rather than risk losing creative control in allowing a third-party studio to produce it. David Maisel, the founding chairman of Marvel Studios, offered to help Hed and Rovio produce the film,[28] as well as John Cohen from Illumination Entertainment and Catherine Winder from Lucasfilm, who later served as the film's producers.[29] Animation services were handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks,[30] making it their first animated film not to be produced by Sony Pictures Animation since Beowulf (2007).
The Angry Birds characters were not depicted in their anthropomorphized cinematic designs until the film's announcement so as to avoid spoiling it for audiences.[31]

Reception[edit]
Box office[edit]
The Angry Birds Movie grossed $107.5 million in North America and $244.8 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $352.3 million.[7] Worldwide, it is the second highest-grossing video game film of all-time behind Warcraft ($433.5 million),[57] and is the most successful Finnish-produced film of all time.[58] Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit of the film to be $72 million.[59]
In North America, the film opened on May 20, 2016 alongside Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys, and was projected to gross $35–40 million or as high as $45 million from 3,932 theaters in its opening weekend.[47][60][61] Deadline noted that the film had the benefit of being the only animated movie in theaters until Finding Dory on June 17.[61] The Angry Birds Movie was the top selling film for the weekend, and grossed $800,000 from Thursday night previews[47] and $11 million on its opening day.[62] In its opening weekend it grossed $38.2 million, finishing first at the box office and marked the third biggest Sony animated opening of all time, behind Hotel Transylvania and Hotel Transylvania 2.[47][63] It also scored the second-best debut weekend ever for a video game adaptation, behind the $47 million debut of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.[64] It dropped 51% in its second weekend, against X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass, grossing $18.7 million.[57]

It's no Inside Out, but it has heart and life, which isn't too shabby for any film—app or not".[72] Variety's Guy Lodge called the film: "A fast, fizzy and frenetically entertaining extension of the manic gaming franchise that, at its zenith, had children of all ages glued to their smartphone screens".[73] While Rafer Guzman of Newsday found the film's plot to be "pretty thin gruel", he thought the script was quite funny and that the animation was brightly colored and appealing.[74]

So do I, come to think of it".[75] In his review for TheWrap, Alonso Duralde wrote, "Let's be clear, then: The Angry Birds Movie isn't pointless because it's based on an app. It's pointless because it's pointless".[76] Stephen Whitty of the New York Daily News gave the film one out of five stars, writing, "The Angry Birds Movie is just fowl".[77]
